OMRI Management

Oversight of the day-to-day operations is the responsibility of the Executive Director/CEO. The Executive Director/CEO works in cooperation with the OMRI Management Team, which is comprised of the Executive Director/CEO, the Review Program and Quality Director, the Technical Director, the Marketing Director and the Operations Director. The Management Team is responsible for review and maintenance of the quality system.

Executive Director/CEO

Peggy Miars (phone extension: 102) came to OMRI in 2010 from California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), where she served for six years as the Executive Director/CEO. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Western Michigan University and completed post-graduate courses in nonprofit management at Regis University in Colorado Springs. Peggy has worked in the organic industry for 20 years, previously in marketing and management positions with Earthbound Farm, Whole Foods Market, Granary Market, various nonprofit organizations, and her own marketing consulting business. She completed IOIA inspector training for crops in 2007 and has had further IOIA training in both the NOP and Canadian Organic Standards. Peggy is the only North American on the World Board of IFOAM-Organics International and serves on the Board of Directors for the International Organic Accreditation Service (IOAS). She volunteers in the cattery at the local humane society and takes homeless dogs to radio and TV stations to promote their adoption.

Technical Director

Johanna Mirenda (phone extension: 129) holds a bachelor's degree in Horticultural Science with a minor in Biology from Pennsylvania State University, and is currently enrolled in a master's program in Sustainable Food Systems at Green Mountain College. She studied agriculture and ecology in Peru and New Zealand, and has several years of academic research experience in plant nutrition. Prior to joining OMRI, she served as the Policy Director for Pennsylvania Certified Organic (PCO), a USDA-accredited certification agency. Johanna works remotely from Vermont, where she lives with her husband Jason and their dog Moose.

Review Program and Quality Director

Kelsey McKee (phone extension: 126) holds a B.S. in Biochemistry and Biophysics from Oregon State University. She has professional experience working as the Quality Assurance Manager in a certified organic food manufacturing facility, as well as laboratory experience working in a NELAC Institute-certified environmental laboratory. She enjoys preparing (and devouring) fresh organic meals straight from the garden, and hopes to instill the same passion in the next generation through her volunteer work at the School Garden Project.

Senior Marketing Director

Amy Bradsher (phone extension: 106) graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a B.A. in Anthropology, and she is currently pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the University of Oregon. She worked in environmental and educational nonprofits throughout Eugene and the San Francisco Bay Area, and studied organic agriculture with the nonprofit Ecology Action. Amy has completed IOIA training for the USDA and Canadian Organic Standards, and she has been with OMRI since 2009. She also serves as Board President for the Willamette Valley Sustainable Foods Alliance, a 501(c)(6) local trade association for natural food businesses.   

Operations Director

Cameron Ference (phone extension: 127) holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of New Mexico where he worked in a neuroimaging research group investigating the genetic underpinnings and cortical basis of mental illness (schizophrenia). Cameron also spent two summers studying fire ecology around Los Alamos County following the 2001 Cerro Grande fire. Prior to joining OMRI, Cameron managed the Quality Assurance department for an organic food processor.

Executive Assistant

Diane Cardwell (phone extension: 138) has worked as an Executive Assistant in the retail, health insurance, healthcare finance, and transportation industries. She also worked for PeaceHealth Medical Group in Eugene doing Physician Recruitment, and was an Inventory Control Assistant Buyer for the Nordstrom Corporate headquarters in Seattle prior to moving to Eugene in 2000. She was on the founding board of local 501(c)3 nonprofit PAAWS (People and Animals Who Serve), and has been active in many Therapy Animal groups in Eugene for the past fifteen years. Diane enjoys spending time at home with her husband and all their animals. 

Human Resources Manager

Blyss Hansen (phone extension: 121) holds a B.A. in Communications from the University of Wyoming with emphasis on human and multi-media communications. Prior to joining OMRI, she served as the Director of Operations and Development for a science museum in Wyoming. She has over ten years experience in the nonprofit sector and has been with OMRI since 2009.

Review Program Technical Manager

Doug Currier (phone extension: 113) holds a B.A. in Geography from the University of South Florida and a M.Sc. in Organic Farming from Scotland’s Rural College. His past research focused on public sector procurement and the organic sector, specifically identifying and overcoming barriers to the procurement and supply of organic produce in schools. As a Product Review Coordinator, Senior Product Review Coordinator, Review Program Technical Supervisor, and now as a Review Program Technical Manager, Doug regularly assesses products for compliance with organic production standards in the U.S. and Canada.

Review Program Administrative Manager

Tony Selvey (phone extension: 120) received a B.S. in Sociology with a minor in Economics. He has worked and interned in several capacities in the nonprofit sector, including administrative support, fundraising and community organization. He is an avid gardener who appreciates pollinator-friendly plants. Tony and his wife enjoy traveling, and OMRI staff always looks forward to seeing the latest slideshow from a recent trip.

Inspections Administrator

Amber Lippert (phone extension: 116) holds a B.S. in Agriculture from Oregon State University and credit towards a Masters of Agriculture Education. As a student, Amber worked in the OSU horticulture department assisting with breeding, seed saving and field trials of open pollinated broccoli and other field crops. Her professional experience includes seven years of work on organic and transitional farms in Oregon and Washington, including coordinating successful transition to organic certification. She has also worked and studied on farms in Latin America and Hawaii. Amber continues to grow vegetables and raise laying hens on her family farm.

Technical Coordinator

Tina Jensen Augustine holds an M.S. in soil science from the University of Washington, where her thesis focused on the effects of nitrogen-fixing trees on soil quality and erosion control in small scale, mountainous agriculture. Her experience includes an internship for an agriculture/nutrition nonprofit in Central America, work trade on two different organic farms, International Organic Inspectors Association (IOIA) basic farm and traceability trainings, and guest lecturing at Oregon State University. She started working with OMRI in 2006. Tina also performs a limited number of inspections for OMRI and serves as a member of the California Organic Products Advisory Committee. She works remotely from Berkeley, CA, where she enjoys gardening and raising her two lovely children.

Application Supervisor

Sara Nienaber (phone extension: 123) holds a B.A. in Zoology from Ohio Wesleyan University, and an M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Oregon, with concentrations in Environmental Health and Public Policy. As an undergraduate student, Sara completed several independent research projects on the potential physiological effects of common pesticides. As a graduate student, she taught a self-designed, interdisciplinary course on Pollution and Health. Sara is passionate about environmental health and social justice, and she currently serves as a board member for the Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides.   

Review Program Technical Supervisors

Ana Negrete (phone extension: 124) holds a B.S. in Agribusiness Management from Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador and an M.S. in Agronomy from University of Puerto Rico where she studied the effect of cover crops on organic sweet pepper yield and soil microbial communities. Ana completed her IOIA farm inspector training in 2010, and her professional experience includes working as an inspector and reviewer for Quality Certification Services (QCS), and internships at organic farms in Ecuador and the U.S.

Daniel Nguyen (phone extension: 114) holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of Oregon. As a student, he assisted the testing of experimental nanotechnology for use in soil and water remediation at UC Santa Barbara. At the University of Oregon, he worked in an ecology lab where he assisted research into Costa Rican orchids.

Senior Product Review Coordinator

Peter Bungum (extension: 130) earned his B.S. and M.S. in Biology from the University of Oregon. He has worked as a college instructor for three different community colleges in the Willamette Valley, as a Biological Technician for the U.S. Forest Service (working with fungal pathogens), and at Oregon State University as a Research Assistant in the Botany and Plant Pathology department. Peter has also owned a metal fabrication business since 2007. Oregon born, he often encourages people to visit the incredible landscape of the Pacific Northwest, including Steens Mountain, The Painted Hills, Dee Wright Observatory, Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier.

Product Review Coordinators

Gwynn Sawyer Ostrom (phone extension: 132) holds a B.A. in Botany from the University of California, Berkeley and an M.S. in Agriculture (with an emphasis in Viticulture) from California State University, Fresno. She spent several years performing research on raisin and wine grapes, pioneered a new dried food process, directed the lab program at a winery in Pennsylvania, and worked to develop new soups and sauces for food service companies. Along with some colleagues, she patented a raisin sampling device in use today by the industry. Gwynn volunteers at the Oregon State University Extension Food Pantry project, and enjoys everything about the outdoors.

Evan Thomsen (phone extension: 135) holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Oregon, with minors in Biology and English Literature. Prior to joining OMRI in 2016, Evan worked in a genetics and biochemistry research lab focusing on chloroplast maintenance and RNA editing in maize. As a native Eugenian, Evan enjoys just about any outdoor activity, but his primary focus outside of work is teaching scuba diving through the University of Oregon Scuba Program.

Nick Stansbury (phone extension: 134) is originally from the Seattle area, where he was a restaurant cook for many years. He returned to college in his mid-twenties and earned a B.S. in Soil Science from Washington State University in 2011. He worked for several years as a research technician in a sustainable agriculture lab at the university; much of that time was focused on research in greenhouse gas emissions from organically managed land. The result of the project was an online carbon footprint calculator supported by WSU called "Ofoot" that went live in 2014. Before coming to OMRI, Nick farmed in Sequim, WA and also spent a summer on an organic farm in the Snoqualmie Valley. In his free time, he enjoys exploring the area by bike, is learning to play the piano and can, on occasion, be found singing with the Eugene Gleemen.

Everett Codd (phone extension: 142) holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from Oregon State University, with a minor in Soil Science. He grew up on a small farm on the Southern Oregon coast, raising hogs and sheep through participation in 4-H for over 10 years. He continued an agricultural career after college, working with the USDA Agriculture Research Service on blueberry and raspberry production. In 2009, he began working with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, testing soil and plant tissue for the Agronomic Division’s Soil Testing Laboratory. Most recently, he held the role of Organic Supervisor for the Center for Environmental Farming Systems, a 2,000-acre collaborative research farm with the North Carolina Dept. of Agriculture, NC Agricultural and Technical State University, and NC State University. Everett enjoys hiking, surfing and traveling across the USA.

Shannon McCormick (phone extension: 104) earned a B.S. in Biology with a focus in Ecology and Evolution and a minor in Philosophy from the University of Oregon. She has several years of extensive microbiology and analytical chemistry experience gained from water testing, food production and manufacturing laboratories. She also has experience as a Quality Control and Document Control Specialist. At the University of Oregon she was an undergraduate Biology Peer Tutor. She is originally from the Portland, OR area and she moved to Eugene in 2008. She enjoys camping with her partner Mike, jamming on guitar and ukulele, sampling the local breweries, and spoiling her two cats.

Jarod Rhoades (phone extension 107) graduated from the University of Oregon Robert D. Clark Honors College with a B.S. in geology. He completed his bachelor’s thesis researching hydrothermal alteration of silicate and sulfide minerals in the groundwater zone of the Butte, Montana porphyry copper deposit. Before joining OMRI, Jarod worked in a variety of scientific and technical fields. He was an instrument specialist in the heavy metals spectrometry department for a water quality analytical laboratory, a field and GPS technician during initial surveys of EPA Superfund sites, and a subject matter expert consultant for companies transferring chemistry, physics and mathematics textbooks into online course content. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, playing his guitars and combining the two, having toured with bands all over the United States and Europe.

Review Program Specialists

Rubi Harney (phone extension: 133) has experience working as a paralegal and an executive assistant at a law firm for six years. Raised in a bilingual and bi-cultural household, Rubi learned from her parents at an early age the value of fairness, equality, the duty of being a good citizen and productive member of our community. As a lifelong Eugenian, she thoroughly enjoys the beauty and the great variety of outdoor experiences that Oregon has to offer her and her family.

Claudia Ortiz Bondioli (phone extension: 131) graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Food Science. As a student, she studied microbiology, testing, food safety and quality assurance programs, laboratory analysis, and sensory evaluation of food products. She also participated in a micro study for a food manufacturer in time temperature management and bacteria growth prevention in food processing and handling. After graduation she worked with an organic food processor in the Quality Assurance department, and later moved on to manage the organic and Kosher programs.

Jennifer Ludwig (phone extension: 111) graduated from Oregon State University with a B.S. in Horticulture focusing on organic production systems. She has over 8 years of greenhouse propagation and management experience working for organic farms and manufacturers. Jennifer volunteers for grassroots organizations involved in biodynamic agriculture and local food systems. She has traveled to New Zealand and England to watch international Rugby World Cup tournaments.

Kate McKay (phone extension: 118) graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a B.S. in Biology/Environmental Sciences. During school she studied conservation, sustainability and ecological diversity. She also worked for the Department of Natural Resources as a Plant Pest and Disease Specialist, diagnosing local tree/plant diseases for landowners all across Wisconsin. Since moving to Eugene in September 2015, she enjoys hiking the various landscapes with her dog Sully and her partner Miles, as well as touring all the local craft breweries and restaurants.

Whitney Hubble (phone extension: 137) graduated from Washington State University with a B.S. in Agricultural Food Systems focusing primarily on Organic Agricultural Food Systems and also Agricultural Food Security. She has several years of experience with farm work and extensive scientific research. She has a passion for organic and sustainable agriculture, community outreach, and education. Although she just recently moved to Eugene in June 2016, she looks forward to becoming an invested local and seeking out adventures in and around the area, such as hiking, visiting local wineries and breweries, and of course good restaurants.

Andy Tylman (phone extension: 139) came to Eugene from Portland in 2008 and graduated from the University of Oregon with a B.S. in Finance in 2013. Prior to joining OMRI, he has worked in insurance, construction, and also managed an educational reptile exhibit. Outside of work, Andy enjoys playing and listening to music, rock climbing and watching movies.

Program Assistant

Rosie Chavez (phone extension: 105) graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Prior to joining OMRI, she worked as a customer service representative and research analyst for the banking industry. Born and raised in Eugene, she is passionate about being involved in her community and has volunteered with various nonprofit organizations throughout the years. Rosie loves exploring the outdoors, dancing, reading, and hanging out in her hammock.

Renewals Coordinator

Cindy Coachman (phone extension: 101) has completed two years of college and has had specialized on-the-job training in customer service, business procedures, money handling, security procedures, credit approvals, document management, and processing of many types of transactions. Cindy has over 20 years experience in business offices and 13 years experience as a small business owner.

Finance Manager

Michelle Jabbora (phone extension: 125) holds a B.A. in Business Administration – Finance Concentration from Western Washington University. She has over 15 years experience in the finance field. Prior to joining OMRI, she managed a small farm in Central Washington.

Information Technology Manager

Mel Bartels (phone extension: 128) has worked as a software manager, architect and lead developer, specializing in leading software teams and creating production optimization applications. He also developed an open sourced telescope control system that became popular worldwide. A speaker at astronomical conferences, his telescope walkabouts are a highlight at the Oregon Star Party. The International Astronomical Union named asteroid 17823 Bartels in recognition for his contributions to amateur astronomy. Mel enjoys helping with his wife’s treatment-free beekeeping. Previously he played trumpet professionally with the symphony and jazz bands and holds a pilot’s license.

Information Technology Advisor

Brian Basor (phone extension: 108) holds a B.S. from Humboldt State University. He began working in the field of information technology in 1996, including server programming, GIS modeling, website design, and database programming. He helped bring internet and telephone services to the Hurricane Katrina disaster zone using radio transmission. Brian also has experience and education in plant ecology, botany, environmental biology, and organic agriculture.

Network Administrator

Todd Ziglinski (phone extension: 115) received a B.S. from the University of Oregon in Journalism/Telecommunications.  He has been in the information technology field since 1990 with a focus on infrastructure, networking, telecom, OS support, and help desk. He previously worked for organizations that focus on IT research as well as education.

Senior Software Developers

Robert Thomsen has been a software designer and programmer since computers had their own rooms. He was also a biologist and roamed the globe building software for fish & shrimp aquaculture projects. His hobbies include sailing, hiking, biking and restoring classic cars. 

Jim Wilkinson (phone extension: 128) has a Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. He has worked as an environmental modeler and software engineer. As an environmental modeler, Jim used meteorological, emissions, and air quality models to predict the evolution of air pollution over many regions of the world in order to determine how best to control emissions to the atmosphere, which leads to poor air quality. As a software engineer, he has developed many different kinds of environmental models that predict various aspects of nature and how humans can impact nature. Jim enjoys coaching youth in football, basketball, baseball, and softball.  He is also an Oregon Certified High School Official in the same sports.

Software Developers

Stephen Manchester (phone extension: 128) has been programming for over 20 years.  Previous projects include hardware device drivers, multimedia based training, and massively multi-player online games.  He is passionate about software architecture, electronics, and just about anything outdoors and loves living in Eugene, Oregon.

Andria Schulze (phone extension: 112) holds a B.S. in Geology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She has served in several roles at OMRI since 2009, when she first began working with OMRI's software development team and Review Program to improve the software tools used to do OMRI’s work. She now serves full time in that capacity. She spends her time outside the office biking, playing banjo and doing yoga.

Junior Software Developers

Daryl Jones graduated with an A.A.S in Computer Programming from Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. He moved here in 2013 after spending a year searching the country for a bike-friendly tree city that reflects his values, and he has fallen in love with Eugene. Daryl is passionate about living healthy and adheres to a whole food, predominantly organic regimen that includes biking and hiking.

Ian Froning holds a B.A. from Colorado College and an M.S. in Physics from Ohio State, where he performed experiments on organic-based magnetic devices. He has since moved to Eugene, Oregon where he enjoys the many trees. Sometimes, however, he still pines for his native homeland of Carbondale, Colorado.

Website Developer

Corydon S. Cailteux (phone extension: 128) has worked in IT and Graphic Design for the last ten years. Originally from St. Louis, MO, he now lives and works in Eugene. He has a passion for graphical user interfaces and developing rich graphical environments. He has previously worked for a number of companies in marketing, design and technology capacities.

PC Support Specialist

Rob Montgomerie (phone extension: 136) has worked in graphic design and PC support since he was a young boy, starting out on MS-DOS and working his way up to modern operating systems while also repairing various hardware. Rob has experience as a systems specialist for two branches of the world’s biggest supplier of natural and organic products, and he brings his knowledge of helpdesk and PC support with him to OMRI. He is constantly exploring new information and ways to improve his skills. Outside of OMRI, Rob works as a musician focused on highly experimental and Avant-garde recordings in his personal recording studio.

Marketing Specialist

Nancy Henderson (phone extension: 122) graduated from Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR with a B.S. degree in Speech Communications. Her career in marketing has taken her from Seattle to San Francisco and back to Eugene where she grew up. Nancy is experienced in the design and layout of marketing and sales materials, events coordination, and administrative assistant duties. One of her favorite volunteering experiences was delivering meals to the elderly for the American Red Cross “Meals-on-Wheels” program.

Finance Administrator

Melody Carr (phone extension: 103) holds an M.A. and a B.A. in the Humanities from Western Oregon University and performed work toward a Ph.D in English at the University of Oregon. She has also completed accounting and computer programming classes at Lane Community College. Melody was the bookkeeper for Surata Soyfoods Cooperative from 1989-1995 where she programmed their manual accounting system onto a computer system using dBASE and Lotus 123. She worked as an independent bookkeeper and copy editor for several years for various publishers and for Peralandra Bookstore. She began work as OMRI's bookkeeper in 1998.

Finance Specialist

Ginger Morton (phone extension: 119) attended Rogue Community College where she earned an AA in Accounting. She later attended the University of Alaska Southeast, focusing on law and computer science. She has over 20 years of office experience, much of which involved public interaction, and one year of experience working with nonprofit agencies. Ginger retired from the State of Alaska in 2009 after serving ten years as the Executive Director of a state regulated professional licensing board.

Administrative Assistant

Josna Lauryan Lewis (phone extension: 100) has over 20 years of experience in administrative support and also as a small business owner. She volunteers at 90by30, whose goal is to reduce child abuse and neglect in Lane County, Oregon, 90% by the year 2030. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, organic gardening, trying out new food recipes, reading, music, and being with family and friends.
