OMRI Reaches 1,000 Companies

(May 13, 2015) OMRI (The Organic Materials Review Institute) is now working with over 1,000 companies, representing nearly 3,500 OMRI Listed® inputs intended for use in producing organic food and fiber. The OMRI Review Program is a voluntary program that started in 1997 with just a handful of products. Nearly twenty years later, reaching 1,000 companies is an achievement indeed.  
 
"These companies have chosen to do the application work to support their customers and the organic community. I appreciate their commitment to organics," says Executive Director/CEO Peggy Miars. She adds, "We work with certification systems around the world, and it's clear that there is a significant advantage to having an expert group like OMRI working with committed companies. The organic industry and the certification system in particular all work more efficiently and with more consistency when there is successful third-party materials review."
 
To ensure that the OMRI Products List© is always accurate and up-to-date, the organization conducts hundreds of free product change reviews and ingredient verifications each year. OMRI also re-reviews each OMRI Listed product every five years to ensure continued compliance of the products. This compliance workload grows along with the companies and products on the OMRI Products List, and the organization continues to add new verification systems and checks to root out fraud. The inspections program recently grew to include 116 products last year, and OMRI continues to randomly inspect or sample at least 1% of listed products annually.  
 
According to Miars, "The companies with OMRI Listed products come to OMRI to substantiate their claims, so that organic customers will have confidence in their products. The work continues year round for both the companies and OMRI to ensure accurate listings and support consumer trust."
