Peggy Miars to Serve on IFOAM World Board

(October 22, 2014) OMRI (the Organic Materials Review Institute) is pleased to announce that Executive Director/CEO Peggy Miars has been elected as the only North American representative to serve a three-year term on the World Board of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM). Peggy will work as part of the 10-member international team to oversee the organization, and to develop recommendations and policies to bring the world a step closer to the mainstream adoption of organic practices.

Peggy has a long standing record of promoting and advancing the organic agriculture movement in the United States, where she first worked to promote organic retailers and farms, and then assumed leadership of the largest certifier in the country, California Certified Organic Farmers. Peggy currently serves as Executive Director/CEO of OMRI, the input review organization that works to harmonize materials used in organic operations throughout North America. Now, Peggy will bring her expertise and passion to the world with IFOAM.

"I'll be working over the next three years with board members from Australia, China, Costa Rica, Germany, India, Namibia, Peru, Spain and Switzerland to help grow the global organic marketplace, communicate the benefits and positive aspects of organics around the world, support organic farmers and guide the future of the highly respected 42-year-old nonprofit organization. This is also an excellent opportunity for me to learn about the use of inputs in other countries, to help OMRI strategically plan our global growth."

Equivalency agreements are effectively streamlining organic trade around the world, but discrepancies remain in the inputs that are allowed as well as the policies that govern input compliance. As OMRI begins to move into the global market with its new OMRI Canada program, navigating those discrepancies has been an ongoing challenge.
